BOAC, Marinduque — Three persons were confirmed dead after storm signal no. 3 hit Marinduque Saturday night and cut down power and communication lines, isolating the province, a social welfare official said Monday morning. One of the three fatalities, Manuel Reyes from Mogpog town, was identified by Julpha Arevalo, head of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office. She said 362 families were evacuated as floods swamped five villages in two towns, namely: Barangay 1 and 2 in Mogpog town and Barangay Lapu-Lapu, Tawiran and Lusoc in Sta. Cruz town.Around 500 houses were damaged and roads have been impassable since Saturday due to fallen trees and landslides, Arevalo added. The power lines and telecommunication lines were cut off since late Saturday afternoon, the official said. Saying thank you for the bounty

MOGPOG town at the northwestern part of Marinduque province held its annual Kangga Festival recently in honor of the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro de Labrador.A thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest, the festival also paid tribute to the farmers and their tools that help put food on the table.Highlighting the “kangga,” a carabao-pulled, sled-type farm cart made from bamboo and wood, the festival reveres the carabao, the “araro” (plow), “halabas” (scythe), “balunasan” (coconut husker), and other farm implements.

The “kangga” is fitted with a system of four-point runners that allows it to glide smoothly on all types of surfaces: hard-packed earth, loose soil, stone-strewn riverbeds, or muddy rice fields.

Mario Manuevo, Mogpog municipal agriculture officer and chair of this year’s Kangga Festival, say the festival is the first of its kind in the country.“This festival is truly for the farmers and a showcase of their ingenuity,” says Manuevo. In a program held after the parade, Mayor Senen Livelo says their adherence to culture, history and tourism is the key to a successful municipality.“Let us not forget the cultures and traditions of our ancestors. They enhance and enrich our local identity,” says Livelo.

The festival featured gaily decorated kanggas pulled by carabaos filled with harvests, barefoot townfolk wearing farmer’s garbs and carrying an assortment of farm tools and “bilaos” (native trays) filled with freshly-picked vegetables and fruits and the carroza of San Isidro de Labrador.Mogpog, the town where the Moriones originated, is pinning its hope on the Kangga Festival to bring in more tourists.
